Brian Lee Porter, 62, passed away on May 12, 2020, following a five year battle with lung disease and the debilitating effects of Type 1 diabetes. Brian was born in Auburn, NY on July 8, 1957, the oldest of 7 children, to Frieda and Gordon Porter. His family traveled a lot for work and Brian became the primary caregiver for his younger siblings. Brian joined the Army where he earned his GED, learned auto mechanics and maintained a fleet of vehicles. Post-service, Brian worked construction and roofing jobs from California to Florida until a roofing accident sidelined that career. Forced to retrain, he discovered a knack for computer repair and service technician. His family fondly called him Mr. Fix-it. Brian was employed most recently at Metroland Business Machines, to whom the family is extremely grateful for their compassion and understanding during Brian’s extended hospital stays. He loved classic country, Harry Potter, Star Trek and camping. Brian is survived by his wife of 33 years, Hilary Hutchison Porter, his two sons, Cody and Shane, his beloved Pittie rescue, Buttercup and his best friend, Paul Gordon. They would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the doctors, nurses and staff at Ellis Hospital, specifically the ICU, for working so hard to keep Brian with us longer than anticipated. Your efforts and kindnesses are appreciated more than you can know. Hilary would like to express her heartfelt gratitude to her “family” at Iroquois Middle School in Niskayuna for their unwavering support and generosity these past five years; hope we are together again soon in the “new normal”. There are no plans for a funeral or memorial service. As he was an avid animal lover, contributions in Brian’s name may be made to the Animal Protective Foundation in Glenville, NY.
